Women’s employment at video game companies in Canada

Gaming is often assumed to be a male-dominated hobby, but there are more female #gamers than some might think.
The workforce however is still largely composed of men. According to the Entertainment Software Association of Canada’s Essential facts, in 2021 women constituted only 23% of the total workforce.
As per the figure below, Ontario has the highest women proportion (26%). While the proportion of women in the workforce does not vary much depending on the province, the percentage of those women that work directly on games varies more – but this could also be related to the higher wider range of roles that there may be at these companies.

I’ve been learning a lot by connecting and following several amazing women in the gaming industry and many companies are developing programs to support equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) among their workforce.
